Headquartered in New Brunswick, New Jersey, 8bottles is a clothing company that manufactures performance polo shirts from PET bottles. It takes eight plastic bottles to make one recycled garment, hence the name. 8bottles’ product is the only pure recycled polo on the market without post-industrial fiber or added dyes. The shirt’s color comes from the original color of the bottles, and eliminating dyes has enabled the company to reduce its carbon footprint and waste by 80 percent. The 8bottles team meticulously sorts and cleans bottles by hand to ensure the high quality of the final product.
Unlike some manufacturers that blend virgin or pre-consumer materials in their “recycled” products, 8bottles uses only 100 percent post-consumer recycled PET bottles. The PET yarn in 8bottles’ garments has received Level 1 certification from Oeko-Tex, the leading textile testing organization in the world. Level 1 certification means that a textile is safe enough to be worn by infants every day. Moisture-wicking and comfortable, 8bottles’ 100 percent recycled polo shirt is colorfast and does not require special care. The fabric will not fade over time and can be worn without ironing. In addition, the packaging materials used by 8bottles are recycled and recyclable, free of dye and bleach, and have minimal printing.
8bottles was founded in 2009 by husband and wife team Robb and Lucy Ziegler. Robb’s stepfather, Jim, runs a textile mill and introduced the couple to Alex, a manufacturing partner who discovered how to make high-quality yarn from recycled bottles. Several months later, 8bottles was born with a mission to make recycled, environmentally friendly products affordable and accessible not just for tree huggers but for everyone. By purchasing only recycled products, 8bottles is helping to preserve the planet’s natural resources for future generations. The company believes that going green does not mean having to be extreme.
