Newcastle Surf School is the longest-running surf school in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas. Catering to students of all ages and levels of surfing, Newcastle Surf School has learn-to-surf programs running with numerous schools, the government-funded Active After-School Communities program, and school sport and marine science. Newcastle Surf School operates out of Nobbys Beach and Blacksmiths Beach all year round for daily lessons, teaching young kids about the ocean and nurturing a passion for the sea.
Through group and one-on-one lessons, Newcastle Surf School students learn a wide range of essential surfing skills such as reading the waves and the ocean, paddling and catching waves, riding waves and standing up, turning, surfing safety, awareness, etiquette, equipment, where to surf, and more. The school provides all the necessary equipment including wetsuits, rash vests, and a variety of surfboards for different abilities. For beginners, the school uses soft, stable boards that are easy to balance, paddle, and surf on.
All Newcastle Surf School coaches hold a Surfing Australia Level 1 Qualification, St. John First Aid Certificate, Australian Professional Lifeguard Certificate, and Working With Children Clearance, in addition to having years of personal surfing experience. Coaches get in the water with students to help them feel more confident and learn faster. Each class is limited to 12 students, with a coach/student ratio of 1:6. All instructors are passionate about surfing and enjoy helping kids learn the sport.
For students who would like to up their game, Newcastle Surf School also offers elite coaching by head coach Daniel Frodsham. A Surfing Australia Level 2 Qualified Instructor and professional surfer who competed in the World Qualifying Series for six years, Frodsham has coached the New South Wales state team to be the most successful at the Australian titles and the Newcastle regional teams for the past 14 years.
