Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Lulu Jr. offers book-making kits that allow children to become published authors, promoting creativity, self-esteem, and literacy. Lulu Jr.’s first product, IlluStory, lets kids write and illustrate their own hardcover book. The IlluStory kit includes ready-to-use book pages, markers, a prepaid envelope, and instructions.
Once a child has written and illustrated their own original story, parents mail the finished product back to Lulu Jr., which will create the hardcover book. The book, which showcases the child as the publishing author on the back cover, arrives in the mail after 4-6 weeks. IlluStory has won over 10 educational awards, including the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal, the Parents’ Choice Classic accolade, and the Creative Child Magazine Toy of the Year honor.
Lulu Jr. also offers the My Comic Book and My Awesome Book kits. Winner of the Academic’s Choice Brain Toy Award, My Comic Book lets kids write and illustrate their own comic book. My Awesome Book is similar to IlluStory but the final product is a larger hardcover book. It has won The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval, Dr. Toy’s Best Classic award, the Tillywig Toy Awards Best Creative Fun honor, and more.
Lulu Jr. recently introduced two educational programs to help teachers enhance their language arts and writing curriculum and nurture little authors. In the Storybook program, each student writes their own story, which Lulu Jr. publishes as a full-color, hardcover book. In the Classbook program, each student writes a page or two of a collaborative story, which is also turned into a full-color, hardcover book. Both programs include free access to Lulu Jr.’s online book-making tools and templates, dedicated customer service for teachers, and order forms for additional copies of books. There are no minimum number of students required.
Lulu Jr. was launched in 2014. All books are assembled in the USA.
